I can’t seem to get The Last Supper out of my head. When this happens, it usually develops into a message series for our Holy Yoga classes. Hence…”The Table.”
John 6:35 NIV “Then Jesus declared, I am the bread of life. He who comes to me will never go hungry, and he who believes in me will never be thirsty.” (italics mine)
Traditionally the “table” is a place where meals take place. Where people gather. Where our bodies are strengthened by the food that we eat and the water that we drink.
I have to wonder what was going through the minds of the disciples that night…as they sat around the table with Jesus, partaking in The Last Supper. What were they thinking as they held in their hands the bread and the wine-symbolic of the body and the blood of Jesus Christ. He stood before them, offering up everything he had and was.
In this scripture, the Greek word for “bread” is translated into “artos.” This bread or artos (also called “loaves of presentation” or “shewbread”) were round loaves that were consecrated to the Lord every Sabbath. They were broken…but never cut.
I love how this parallels to the body of Jesus, broken for you and for me. I read a quote recently that says, “He was broken so that we don’t have to be.”
My friends-He took it. And continues to take it. Taking our pain and giving us healing. Taking our death and giving us life. He is our soul’s sufficiency….the nourishment and strength of our hearts. He promises to satisfy EVERY need-to even be MORE than enough.
So there is an invitation. Because the SAME Jesus that stood before the disciples is the SAME Jesus that stands before us now…offering us the chance to live. To REALLY live. He says in His word, “Taste and see that the Lord is good.”
My friends-I don’t know about you…but I am running to the table.
